Non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease present a growing public health challenge globally and within the UAE.
Nutri-Mark has been developed to support Abu Dhabi Government policies aimed at:
- Improving population nutrition and dietary quality
- Reducing diet-related health risks
- Supporting evidence-based regulatory interventions
- Encouraging industry innovation and reformulation
The Nutri-Mark grading system is based on the 2023 revision of the Nutri-score front-of-pack nutritional labelling system first implemented in France in 2017. The Nutri-score system was originally developed based on work by the team of Serge Hercberg, as well as expertise from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) and the High Council for Public Health (HCSP). Several European Union countries have decided to recommend the label: Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The Nutri-Mark reflects international experience with front-of-pack nutrition labelling systems, while being adapted to the local regulatory and market context of the UAE.
