Abu Dhabi, May 02,2021: The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), carried out a Ramadan inspection campaign on pre-packaged products sold by retailers and other vendors in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT).


The inspection campaign by QCC which is responsible for developing the quality infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, was aimed at verifying the accuracy of weights and balances used in the market and the volume and quantity of pre-packed products sold during Ramadan. 

In a statement, QCC said the campaign was initiated to ensure and preserve consumer rights on one hand and the rights of manufacturers, distributors and importers on the other, which in turn was beneficial to the economy in particular and the society in general.

His Excellency Khalaf Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Market and Consumer Services Sector, QCC, said:  "The campaign is organized annually as part of the National Program for Concurrent Campaigns. It aims to preserve consumer rights, enhance consumer confidence in the market, increase competitiveness of national products, and also ensure that there are no violation of mandatory norms in the case of pre-packaged products.”

He said the campaign was across the emirate, including Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and 918 commodities representing 108 products were verified, and the compliance of these Ramadan products was at 98 per cent.

“The Council’s strategy is to enhance cooperation with all stakeholders and partners to build a system of joint cooperation so that high levels of quality and conformity are ensured. The campaign in the backdrop of the precautionary measures in the country, focused on the accuracy of weights and balances and quantities of pre-packed products, thereby ensuring the reliability of the Ramadan offers in the market. The aim of these inspections was also to ensure that the product volumes were in line with the advertised information and specifications,” HE Al Mazrouei said.

He said that since 2013, QCC has been reviewing and conducting metrological verification of pre-packaged products across factories, commercial outlets which stocks these products, including imported ones, in line with the Council’s mandate.  The aim of such supervisory initiatives was to ensure that the products followed regulatory norms in terms of quantity and that the information on product labels matched with what is actually packed and offered to the consumer.

The inspection of pre-packaged products spanned a variety of solid packages, liquid containers, solid containers with a liquid medium etc. “At the end of the year, QCC will also start monitoring of packages where quantity is measured by length and area, so that it will be the leading national authority in providing metrological verification services in accordance with the best international technical and professional standards, with the best of qualified Emirati cadres,  and a Central Testing Laboratory with the latest equipment and services," HE Al Mazrouei added.

QCC conducts verification of high and low precision scales across petroleum products, fabrics, tire pressure gauges and medical devices. The Council also monitors compliance on legal measurement units as stipulated by the National System of Measurement in Commercial Transactions.
